Lower back pain is the leading cause that brings people to a chiropractor. Research shows that approximately 80% of adults will experience this pain at some point in their lives, and it can have a severe impact on patients. Symptoms can vary from a dull ache to sharp pains, with additional symptoms including numbness, pins and needles, and leg pain. Fortunately, in Christchurch, we have a team of expert chiropractors who specialise in diagnosing and treating back pain.
Our chiropractors use a range of treatments, including focusing on muscles and joints in the spine, which can reduce pain and relieve pressure, often resulting in a significant reduction of lower back pain. Our treatment approach is tailored to each patient, depending on their preferences and various factors. We are equipped with a range of tools and techniques to provide the best treatment possible, and we aim for the highest levels of patient satisfaction.
As we age, it is common for the joints, discs, and ligaments in the spine to experience natural wear and tear. While this is part of the normal aging process, it may not necessarily cause any symptoms. However, to mitigate the effects of these age-related changes, it is important to keep the spine mobile and the surrounding muscles strong.
Chiropractic treatment can be a beneficial option for arthritis patients as it can improve their quality of life by reducing pain, stiffness, and increasing range of movement. Our personalised treatment approach, in combination with simple home exercises, can effectively address these symptoms and maintain a strong and mobile spine.
Most patients do not remember a significant event that triggered their pain. In many cases, the pain can just appear and slowly worsen. This is often a result of accumulative overload on the muscles, joints and ligaments in the spine from everyday problems such as poor posture, prolonged positions and muscular tension from stress.
Occasionally the nerves in the spine can become irritated. There are different reasons why this may happen, but discs in the spine or age-related changes can lead to pain radiating down the leg – which is referred to as sciatica, which is often associated with pins and needles, numbness, or tingling.

It’s important to remember the intensity of the pain is not usually an indicator for how serious the problem is. Muscle spasms can be incredibly painful but tend to resolve quickly. Pain does not equal damage.
Take what you need for relief (ask your GP for advice or prescription), but don’t forget that the tablets will mask the pain and it’s best not to take them for long periods of time.
If you have a new onset of pain, use ice not heat. Acute injuries cause inflammation which is painful, so wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a tea-towel and place on the painful area for 15 minutes every hour.
One of the most important things you can do is stay mobile. Gentle stretching and go on short 10 minute walks if possible. Evidence shows light activity allows muscles to regain normal movement and reduce stiffness. People who remain active are more likely to have a faster recovery.
If the lower back pain persists beyond 48 hours, you may want to visit your local chiropractor. Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners and will assess, diagnose and manage conditions of the spine. The Royal College of GP’s suggests referring patients for early manipulation for the treatment of low back pain.
